To be screened prior to the inaugural of centenary fete

Showcasing Osmania University’s growth since its inception, the Department of Communication and Journalism has released a 12-minute promotional film that is all set to capture the hearts of the Osmanians.

The film will be screened prior to the inaugural of centenary celebrations by President Pranab Mukherjee on April 26. Later, the film will be posted on the university website to reach out to Osmanians across the world.

K. Stevenson, head of Department of Communication and Journalism, said the film traces the university’s growth from its inception to its present status, giving an overview of the faculty, various departments and the courses offered.

The state-of-the-art research labs and infrastructure are documented in the film, which also gives a glimpse of various facilities such as library, playground and gymnasium available for students. The university’s iconic Arts College building is beautifully captured in overhead drone shots. Rare vintage photographs of OU in its initial days are also a part of the film.

Students of first year Master’s course shot the film for two weeks and covered various institutions across the campus while research scholars did the background research. Post-production work was carried out in the studios of the department.

Prof. Stevenson said the visuals of the OU student populace, with a large number of foreign students, are an indication of the cultural diversity that exists on the campus.

The film was conceptualised in the context of aggressive competition in the education sector which made marketing and positioning the university imperative. Further, the film is expected to help in branding the Osmania University, he added.

Special mention is made of the meritorious alumni such as former Prime Minister of India, P.V. Narasimha Rao; India’s first astronaut Rakesh Sharma; celebrated film director Shyam Benegal and Padma Shri and Ramon Magsaysay awardee Shantha Sinha.

The film is a collective effort of the faculty, students and research scholars of the department, which has produced stalwarts in journalism with most of them serving in various capacities in media in India and abroad. The department was founded by an American, DeForest O’Dell, in 1954. He graduated from Butler University and went on to head its journalism department. Later, he earned a Master’s degree and Ph.D from Columbia University, recalls Dasu Kesava Rao, a student of the 1970-71 batch and who later retired as the Bureau Chief of The Hindu in Hyderabad.

Nizamabad physician awarded

A senior physician and social activist J. Bapu Reddy was conferred a national level award by the Diabetes India Organisation at its conference in New Delhi recently for his contribution in the field of enlightenment and prevention of diabetes through his social service organisation Arogya Telangana.

The conference was conducted under the aegis of the World Health Organisation. Dr. Bapu Reddy, who has been practising for the past three decades in the town, had conducted several free medical camps and examined and treated over 5,000 patients.

He also counselled the patients and visitors on the ills of sugar and blood pressure and measures to be taken to prevent and control them. He is also pioneer in the execution of school health programme and continuation of campaign on ODF villages in the district. Doctors, friends and colleagues congratulated him for his achievement.

Pandu Ranga Rao invited to Rashtrapati Bhavan to receive Visitor’s Award

When your tyre goes flat in a remote area where it’s hard to find people, let alone repair shops, you have no option but to push your bicycle or motorcycle to a nearby town or wait till you get some help by someone passing by.

Kantale Pandu Ranga Rao, who was once stuck in a situation like that, had to face some difficulties before he got his tyre repaired. Not letting the matter slip, he decided to find a solution, a quick fix, to repair flat tyres in no time.

Liquid solution

For over a year, Pandu Ranga Rao, a native of Sukkal Teerth village in Kangti mandal in Narayanakhed constituency, experimented with over 30 different chemicals and came up with a liquid solution that quickly arrests air leak when rubbed onto the punctured spot.

His innovation was identified by Brig. P. Ganesham of Palle Srujana, a voluntary organisation promoting rural innovations. He is also associated with National Innovations Foundation (NIF), which promotes innovations at the national level. Brig. Ganesham helped Pandu Ranga Rao establish Airceil Tubes Private Limited to sell his product and also popularised his innovation at the national level.

Now, the liquid solution is being sold in small tubes in the local market, as well as Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Taking note of his innovation, Rashtrapati Bhavan has invited Pandu Ranga Rao to receive Visitor’s Award-2017. He would also attend dinner on March 6 at RBCC.

Expressing happiness over his selection for Visitor’s Award, he said he would be leaving for Delhi on Friday.

Eight-year-old Bhukya Chirutej Singh Rathod from Mahboobabad identifies differently from most children her age. While her friends watch cartoons or are busy attending tuitions after school, Bhukya says she is better off playing chess or exploring the world map. “She never sits still and needs to be occupied with some activity all the time,” complains her mother, but you can see her swell with pride as she talks of how her daughter made it to the India Book of Records, recently, for identifying 127 countries on the world map, within just one minute.

This was not her only achievement however. She has set two world records in the Golden Book of World Records and one in Star World Records. “It all started just last December when my mother saw that a government teacher had named the 52 countries in Asia within a certain time limit, and that person got a lot of recognition for it. Then, she thought she could do it too, and attempted it. While she was practicing, I found it interesting and I took it up,” says Bhukya, who is also a State level chess player. Her father Kiran Singh Rathod informs that she has now been given a date by the Guinness Book of World Records in March, and that she aims to identify and name all the 236 countries in two minutes.

A prodigy of sorts, Bhukya is already thinking big. “I want to become an IAS officer,” she says and adds, “I know I have a lot of time before I can be qualified to become one, I’ve learnt that if I am at that position, I can help the poor in their education.” To this, her father says that they believe in her, since she is brilliant. “We noticed that she has a photographic memory. She needs to read them just once, and she can remember forever. She is always enthusiastic to learn new things and manages to finish all her homework by herself at school, so she has time to do other things at home. She plays with her friends too, of course. Always a straight A’s kid, she asks us to enroll her in summer camps during the holidays. She likes learning Vedic maths and the abacus, and playing chess is one of her favourite pastimes,” he says.

Mission Kakatiya awards for 2016 announced

The Hindu Warangal Reporter wins second prize in print media category

The State Government on Monday announced the Mission Kakatiya media awards for 2016 with G. Krishna of Namasthe Telangana, a Telugu daily newspaper, selected for the first prize in print media category that includes Rs.1,00,000 cash and a memento.

The committee headed by Press Academy Chairman Allam Narayana and comprising Resident Editor of The Hindu Chintala Prashanth Reddy and Editor of Namasthe Telangana Katta Shekhar Reddy completed the process selecting mediapersons for awards after examining the entries received in various categories.

The theme for entries this year was impact of Mission Kakatiya on different sections of society, particularly those depending on community-based vocations.

Other winners include Gollapudi Srinivas Rao of The Hindu for second prize and E. Ganganna of Andhra Jyoti for third prize in the print media category comprising the case prizes of Rs.75,000 and Rs.50,000, respectively.

In the electronic media category, G. Buchhanna of V6, M. Mainkeshwar of Etv and B. Shiva Kumar of T News were selected for the first three prizes. Special category awards comprising Rs.1,00,000 cash prize each were given to K. Ramachandra Reddy and T. Anjaiah.

Jury special awards comprising Rs.25,000 cash prize each were given to D. Suryakumar and S. Bhatla Narasiah, both of Telangana magazine, S. Rajasekhara Reddy of Sakshi and B. Rajender of Eenadu in the print category and D. Ramesh of TV9 and B. Narender of TV5 in the electronic media category.

Special category (consolation) award comprising Rs.10,000 cash prize was given to Tejaswini, a student of RGUKT at Basar.

Former Union Minister P Shivshankar passes away in Hyderabad

From polishing shoes to becoming a minister in Indira Gandhi’s government, Shivshankar had come a long way.

Shivshankar died Monday morning due to old age-related health issues, said his son Vinay Kumar.

Former Union Minister P Shivshankar, an influential Congress leader during the governments of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, passed away on Monday in Hyderabad. He was 90.

He died Monday morning due to old age-related health issues, said his son Vinay Kumar.

Shivshankar served as a judge in the then Andhra Pradesh High Court, but resigned from his job and practised law in the High Court and Supreme Court, he said. He successfully handled cases, especially those related to the Emergency, on the request of Indira Gandhi and won as an MP from Secunderabad in 1978 and 1980.

He served as Union Law Minister in 1980 and also as Minister for Energy (Petroleum). Indira Gandhi used to wait for Shivshankar’s arrival for important meetings, Kumar claimed.

The senior leader played an important role in Congress affairs as well. After the assassination of Indira Gandhi, amid doubts expressed by some, Shivshankar felt that Rajiv Gandhi could become the Prime Minister.

He lost narrowly from Medak Lok Sabha constituency, which was earlier represented by Indira Gandhi. He was, however, elected to Rajya Sabha from Gujarat and held important portfolios like the External Affairs, HRD, Commerce and Planning in Union Cabinet.

He served as Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha and also as Leader of Opposition in the Upper House. In 1998, he was elected to Lok Sabha from Tenali in Coastal Andhra.

He also served as Governor of Sikkim and Kerala. He joined the Praja Rajyam Party of actor turned politician Chiranjeevi which subsequently merged with Congress.

Born in Hyderabad as one among 11 children, Shivshankar ran away from home as he could not continue studies and reached Amritsar, Kumar said.

He did odd jobs like shoe-polishing in Amritsar, but educated himself. He returned to Hyderabad and joined as PA to then Mayor of the city before becoming a judge in the High Court, he added.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, state Congress president N Uttam Kumar Reddy and several other leaders have condoled the death of Shivshankar.

Hyderabad firm opens store for purified vegetables

25 more stores to be opened in one year

YentraTech Controls Pvt Ltd has opened the first in a chain of stores that will retail vegetables, fruits, meat and pulses purified using a technology developed by the company.

Addressing presspersons at Purin Foods store at Jubilee Hills, Chairman Prasad Yerramsetty said the company planned to open 25 stores in one year in the city. The estimated investment on them would be around ₹10 crore. In the next phase, Purin Foods outlets would be expanded to Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru and Chennai.

Skaters from Telangana have done it again, reaping a rich haul of six gold, 10 silver, and four bronze medals in the just-concluded Senior National Roller-Skating Championship in Noida.

Above all, the gold medallists — Veda Dundigalla, Vaibhav Bhamidipati (gold in pair and solo dance events), Vanshika Konanki, Kanti Sree and Juhith Chalamacharla — have earned the eligibility for final screening scheduled in May for the world championship to be held in China this August. For silver and bronze medallists like Kairavi Falguni Thakkar, Manish Sivakumar, Eluri Krishna Sai Rahul, Nihal Kopparthi, Gokul Sivakumar and others, it’s a sign of better things to come.

With the two-time bronze medallist in 2010 Asian Games and arguably the India’s best skater now, Anup Kumar Yama, donning the coach’s role, the young talent can bank on his experience and gain the desired confidence to dream big.

Rigorous training

Following the Sport Authority of Telangana starting the first, full-length rink at Gymkhana Ground at Secunderabad, Yama had the liberty to train these skaters not just at his own Yama Skating Academy at Marredpally (which is one-third of the stipulated size of the rink) but also at the new venue to ensure that the results are there for all to see.

Yama, the Arjuna awardee, points out that what separates his training methods from the others is that it’s mandatory for parents to accompany their children for daily practice sessions as they are also given a feel of what it means to mould raw talent into champion performers. “Right now, about 100 skaters are being trained by me. And I am glad at the kind of support the SATS is extending and I am sure we will produce world championship medallists soon,” says Yama.

Interestingly, fitness specialist Senthil monitors not just the physical aspects of the skaters but also the diet that they follow to keep them competition-fit at the highest level.

“Yes, it will not be a bad idea if the rink is covered with a roofing so that the facility can be put to optimum use in all seasons,” Yama feels.

Radio Kisan Diwas celebrated at AIR

All India Radio, Adilabad, celebrated Radio Kisan Diwas on Wednesday, the date on which it started the ‘Kisan Vani’ programme. Agriculture came to be the central theme of the programme, and its manifestation in local ethos was showcased as part of the celebration.

While the Adivasi Thotti troupe of Pendur Tukaramsang a Gondi folk song in which gods order a Gond king to cultivate millets, the local Burrakatha troupe sang songs related to agriculture.

Telangana Grameena Bank, Adilabad, regional manager P.R.V. Ramchander Rao spoke about his experiences. The AIR felicitated progressive farmers, including those who take up organic farming, from Adilabad and neighbouring districts. The farmers too spoke about their experiences.

Millet food prepared by Ram Babu of Hyderabad and the exhibition of old radio sets, however, became the centre of attraction. Mr. Babu is an expert in millet food and its correlation with Ayurveda and the human body.

Scientists from Adilabad Agriculture Research Station, Kisan Vikas Kendra, District Agriculture Advisory, and Transfer of Technology Centre attended the programme. AIR Adilabad deputy director Sumanaspati Reddy and deputy director of Vijaya Dairy Madhusudan also participated.

Celebrations at ISRO scientist’s home

A festive atmosphere prevailed at the residence of J. Sai Teja, a scientist/engineer of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), in his native town of Kothagudem on Wednesday following the successful launch of 104 satellites on a single PSLV mission from the space centre at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.

Friends and relatives of Mr. Teja, who was reportedly part of the team involved in the record-breaking feat, conveyed their wishes to his parents Ravi Kumar and Sudharani over telephone.

“It is a proud moment for every Indian as the ISRO achieved the remarkable feat,” said Mr. Ravi Kumar.

‘Great honour’

When contacted, he told The Hindu that it was a matter of great honour that his son was part of the team involved in the mission.

Sai Teja pursued his B.Tech (avionics) from the Thiruvananthapuram-based Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology and joined the ISRO as a scientist/engineer in 2013.
