Hyderabad:

Women will be empowered only when they become economically independent and come forward to complain about sexual harassment, said Mr Anurag Sharma, the DGP of Telangana.

With TS government reserving 33 per cent posts for women in the police department, every police station will have women police officers. This move will encourage women to approach the police, Mr Sharma said at a programme on ‘Awareness on Legal rights and Self defence Techniques’, organised by the TS CID and Hyderabad SHE team.

More police stations and women officers may not empower women. Only when they achieve economic independence, they get empowered, he said.

Hyderabad police commissioner M. Mahender Reddy praised the role of SHE teams in the city. Nearly 100 SHE teams are operating in the city and they carry cameras to record eve teasers in action. “Apart from booking them, they are also counselled along with their parents and families,” the commissioner said.

The police will be installing one lakh CCTV cameras across the city and they will be linked to the Command Control Center. For providing a one stop multipurpose help center for women, a new counselling center has been opened at HACA Bhavan.

Tollywood actress Manchu Laxmi said there should be a change in the mindset of men towards women. Film star Ramcharan Tej, senior police officials and nearly 3,000 city college girls participated in the event, where they were given awareness on legal issues and taught self defence techniques.

TSPSC toppers hail from humble backgrounds

A security guard at a migrant labourer’s work place shaped the topper of the first ever recruitment examination in Telangana. It is not just about this incredible feat, but the fact that a labourer’s son has emerged topper in a government recruitment test itself infuses confidence in the system.
Yadaiah
Yadaiah

Yadaiah, who worked as a labourer during his school days with his parents always on the move in search of work, is topper of the first two recruitment exams conducted in the new State. A Mechanical Engineer from Osmania University College of Engineering (OUCE), Yadaiah tasted success despite the adversities he faced as a child. Educated in social welfare schools and getting into OUCE on merit, he had many an opportunity to pursue a career in the corporate sector.

“Seeing Telangana agitation unfolding on the campus as a student I decided to be part of the building process of the new State,” says Yadaiah, who turned down offers from Infosys and L&T in Gujarat. “I had seen enough migration as a child and now I want my parents to be at home in K.C. Thanda (a hamlet of Ambatipalli village in Lingala mandal of Mahabubagar district) and enjoy their life,” he adds.

The young man says he will always be indebted to the security guard at a company in Palvancha where his parents worked as labourers for sometime. “He generated interest in education when I was just six or seven years old, teaching me as I played around him. Later, I was directly admitted in 4th class in A.P. Tribal Welfare School in Camp Rayavaram,” the topper adds. He then moved to AP Social Welfare Residential School, Chityala in Wanaparthy mandal. Sri Chaitanya institutions offered him free Intermediate education given his talent, leading him to OUCE for his B.Tech and also M.Tech in Production Engineering.

The most emotional moment of his life was when the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) Chairman Ghanta Chakrapani said, “You are the ambassador of TSPSC’s efforts.”

“The test and the interview shattered views that jobs in the government sector are always managed with money and influence. This has reinforced my desire to work sincerely for the new State,” says Yadaiah.

Prof. Chakrapani agreed that they could send a positive signal to lakhs of government job aspirants, that only merit prevails and not money and connections. The statement gains credence as Yadaiah is not alone in the list of achievers. Sandhya Rani, daughter of a washerman also figured in the top with her hard work and determination. “I always thought interviews in recruitment exams are fixed, but what surprised me was my selection and the way they made me comfortable during the interview,” says the B.Tech graduate from JNTU Jagityal, brimming with confidence.

As a school student, Sandhya helped her parents in washing clothes after collecting them from different households. Her parents continue to wash clothes in Siddipet though they could educate two of Sandhya’s sisters who are married and well settled now. “They believe in dignity of labour and I will similarly respect my job as the Assistant Executive Engineer for which I am selected,” says Sandhya.

Telangana becomes first State to make gender education compulsory

GenderEqualityTELANGANA11jan2016

The book discusses gender in its composite form without limiting itself to crime against women.

Telangana has become the first State to introduce compulsory gender education at the graduate level; without repeating gender stereotypes in its bilingual textbook titled, ‘Towards a World of Equals.’

The book introduced on a pilot basis in engineering colleges affiliated to the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU-Hyderabad) discusses gender in its composite form without limiting itself to crime against women. From information on unacknowledged women writers of Telangana to problems of sex selection and women’s work in politics and economics, the book attempts to cover it all.

It also touches upon complex subjects like female-centric history and male-female relationships.

Structured in simple language and form to suit under-graduates, the book discusses different strands of women’s movements across the world, introducing students to political movements of Afro-American, Caribbean, African, Dalit and minority women.

And coupled with the book is a collection of visual teaching tools which include documentary films.

The book is being taught over 14 weeks in a semester at the rate of two classes per week.

Credits earned in the end semester examination add up to students’ GPAs.

A nine-member, all-women, panel which drafted the syllabus and developed its content has already held four training workshops for groups of 15 to 40 teachers and is expected to take up yet another session this week.

What makes the textbook interesting is the gamut of reactions and classroom discussions which it attempts to generate. For instance, in its first chapter on Socialisation, the book hints at initiating a discussion in the classroom on “Are boys taught household work while growing up? Discuss your experiences at home.”

Optimistic
Editors of the textbook published by the Telugu Academy are optimistic about the results.

“We have received a lot of good feedback from teachers,” said A. Suneetha, one of the editors.

The book discusses construction of gender stereotypes through pictures on male and female hairstyles, clothing and discussions on popular songs like ‘Kolaveri’, advertisements and films.

For the past few weeks, V. Kalyani, a community activist of the village has been paying Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 8,000 for three youth, who were manufacturing rings that are being used in the constriction of toilets. Similar amount is being paid for another three youth at P.T. Venaktapuar. Both these villages were located at Jagadevpur mandal of the district. They are preparing 40 to 50 rings a day and they are being paid Rs. 50 per ring and Rs. 70 per cement plate in addition to supplying required raw material.

At both the place, the youth are family members of Self Help Groups (SGHs) members who were trained to manufacture rings and plates that can be used in the construction of individual sanitary latrines (ISLs).

The district administration has faced a typical problem of rings for the construction of ISLs when it had fixed a target of one lakh in number. There was no availability of rings. Then Collector D. Ronald Rose initiated the idea of training youth from the families of SHGs and it was turned as a grand success. Each ISL needs about eight rings for the construction and it was estimated that the district needs about 8 lakh rings for the construction of one lakh ISLs. As part of that 300 moulds were supplied by the administration for the mandal Samakhyas which are being used to prepare rings. Another 400 are in the making at Kowdipally where they are being designed, manufactured and supplied. The administration has decided to get about 1,000 moulds manufactured and supplied so that the mandal samakhays can meet the demand for ring manufacturing.

“We are supplying moulds for mandal Samakhyas, who in turn preparing rings and supplying to the villages wherever the women groups are active getting the toilets constructed. Similarly, five rural sanitary marts were sanctioned at Kowdipally, Gajwel, Toopran, Sangareddy and Kondapur from where the sanitary material would be supplied to villages,” DRDA Project Director Ch. Satyanarayana Reddy told The Hindu . The effort is to supplement the demand that surged due to sudden interest by rural public to have toilets at their house.

The women groups were able to sell each ring for about Rs. 160 per unit where as the open market rate was between Rs. 200 to Rs. 220.

The former flight attendant is also writing a book on her role in the rescue of a child bride who was being flown out of India

Cancer has failed to break her spirit and, as indefatigable as ever, Amrita Ahluwalia is back.

The former flight attendant was in the news after her timely alert that led to the rescue of an 11-year-old Hyderabadi girl married to a 60-year-old Arabian and travelling on an Indian Airlines plane that Ms. Ahluwalia was working in.

Ms. Ahluwalia is now starting a helpline for women in distress at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here. “I am launching a round-the-clock Amrita’s helpline at the airport for women air travellers in distress. After fighting and surviving cancer, it is a new life for me and I will work on this till my last breath to help and support women and children of Hyderabad, the city which I have adopted,” she says.

Ms. Ahluwalia earned recognition for her sensitivity to a girl in distress and her courage in tackling the issue, when she helped a passenger on August 10, 1991. She had noticed a sobbing Ameena on the Hyderabad –– Delhi flight and took the child under her wings. She filed a complaint with the police in Delhi, raising a nationwide outcry against the practice of forcible marriage of young girls to Arab nationals.

“I felt ashamed to be the one to tell the world that look, we sell our children in the name of marriage,” says Ms. Ahluwalia. She is recuperating from a surgery followed by six sessions of chemotherapy and 32 sessions of radiation therapy to tackle cancer that was diagnosed last year. She said that such practices continue, despite all the attention that the 1991 episode created. The helpline, which is to be launched with the assistance of the Hyderabad police, will provide a support system to women air travellers in distress. Transit and short stay facilities, counselling, linkage with welfare departments and identification of family and friends for care and protection will be offered.

Apart from medical care and assistance, legal support will be provided if required. “It could be poor maids returning home from abusive or exploitative employers or those cheated by agents with their passport or documents taken away,” she explains.

Ms. Ahluwalia’s life comprising long hours on flights and trials and tribulations on personal and professional fronts and the crusade on behalf of Ameena, all are getting into the pages of a book, Ek Thi Amrita.

“I am halfway through writing the book. Comedies and tragedies and all aspects of my life are part of it,” she says.
